Issue #7 | Am I a Good Basketball Parent?
Every basketball parent wants to help their son or daughter succeed—but sometimes the best support is knowing when to encourage, when to hold them accountable, and when to simply let them play.
In Issue #7 of Vertical Hoops Weekly, we look at how parents can support their player's basketball journey without creating unnecessary pressure, five qualities of great basketball parents, the value of playing multiple sports, and why enjoying the process may be just as important as where basketball ultimately takes you.
Issue #6 | You Don’t play AAU
We call almost all spring and summer basketball “AAU”—but much of what families call AAU basketball today isn’t actually AAU at all.
In Issue #6 of Vertical Hoops Weekly, we break down how AAU helped shape grassroots basketball, how today’s travel basketball landscape has evolved, and the pros and cons of AAU membership. Plus, this week’s Player Spotlight features Bentley University guard Jordan Elliot, and Coach Shea shares his perspective on why AAU still has value—even if it’s no longer the only option. Issue #5 | Should You Stay or Should You Transfer?
Should your player stay or transfer? Learn how to evaluate playing time, development, school fit, and long-term opportunity before making one of basketball's most difficult decisions.
Issue #4 : Are Basketball Trainers Worth the Money?
Should basketball families invest in a basketball trainer? This week's Vertical Hoops Weekly breaks down when private training is worth the investment, what separates great trainers from the rest, and features rising 2029 prospect Oli Higgins and NSSA founders Andre & Jessica Langley.
Issue #3 | Choosing an AAU Program
Choosing an AAU basketball team is one of the biggest decisions a player and family will make—but the right choice isn't always the program with the biggest name or highest circuit.
In Issue #3 of Vertical Hoops Weekly, Coach Jason Shea explains why player development, coaching, communication, role, and long-term fit often matter more than logos and social media hype. Learn the five questions every family should ask before joining an AAU program, the five signs you're on the right team, and why chasing exposure before you're ready can actually slow your recruiting journey.
This issue also features a spotlight on Alex Weaver (Windsor HS / BABC), a coach spotlight on Yale Associate Head Coach Matt Kingsley, and practical recruiting advice for players, parents, and coaches looking to make smarter basketball decisions.
Issue #1 | The Reality of Modern College Recruiting
The transfer portal, the new NCAA eligibility rules, recruiting timelines, live periods, circuits, camps, budgeting, and what every family should understand before spending another dollar this summer.
MEET COACH SHEA
Over the past two decades, I've had the opportunity to coach championship teams, serve as an athletic director, build Vertical Hoops into one of the Northeast's premier basketball event organizations, and help more than 50 student-athletes continue their basketball careers at the collegiate level. Those experiences have allowed me to see the game from every angle—as a coach, educator, event director, and mentor.
I created Vertical Hoops Weekly because I believe the basketball community deserves practical, honest information that helps coaches, players, and families make better basketball decisions. Every Monday, I share recruiting insights, coaching ideas, player and program spotlights, and the stories shaping basketball across the Northeast.
Whether you're a coach looking to build your program, a player chasing your goals, or a parent navigating the basketball journey, I hope you'll find something valuable in every issue.
